Stay Warm and Save All Winter Long

Published: 5/14/2021 7:26:32 PM

Follow these tips to keep your family comfortable and your heating bills low throughout the cold months.

Couple sitting by warm fire in living room

Space heating is the largest energy user in many homes. Although it's important to weatherize your home and have your heating system inspected by a qualified professional at the beginning of the season, you shouldn't stop there. There are a number of things you can do throughout the winter to save money and improve the comfort of you and your family.

Conserving energy

Save energy by setting your thermostat at the lowest comfortable temperature. Optimize savings by lowering temperatures when you are sleeping or away from home. Afraid you might forget? A programmable thermostat can make the adjustments for you.

Reverse the airflow direction of ceiling fans, forcing warm air to bounce off the ceiling down into the living space where you need it. Also, open window treatments on south- and east-facing walls during the day to let in the warming sunshine. At night, close them to keep cold air out and maintain the heat inside your home.

Making the most of your heating system

Change the air filter on your furnace once per month during the heating season. A dirty filter restricts air flow and causes the system to run less efficiently.

Inspect the ductwork in exposed areas such as the basement or attic, and repair any leaks or disconnections. Contact a qualified professional if you suspect a serious problem.

Hidden gaps may occur where electrical lines, plumbing and gas pipes enter your home from the outdoors. Seal these areas with a do-it-yourself spray foam insulation product.

If your heating system is older or in need of repair, consider replacing it with an ENERGY STAR®-certified furnace, boiler or heat pump. ENERGY STAR heating systems are significantly more efficient than standard models.

Any time of year is the perfect time for a home energy audit to find ways to improve the efficiency of your home and reduce your energy bills.
