Cass County Electric Cooperative sponsors two students to experience Washington, D.C.

Fargo, N.D. - Cass County Electric Cooperative (CCEC) believes that students should see their nation's capital up close, learn about the political process, and interact with their elected officials. This is why, every year, CCEC sponsors students from its membership to attend the Electrical Cooperative Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. We are thrilled to announce that the following students have been chosen to represent CCEC on the tour:

                             Brianna Schmitz                            Mara Smith
Daughter of Bill and Tara Schmitz   Daughter of Mark and Sarah Smith
Oakes High School              Fargo Davies High School
Class of 2025                            Class of 2025

The Electric Cooperative Youth Tour has brought high school students to Washington D.C., for a week in June every year since the late 1950s. Students from 18 high schools across CCEC's service territory are eligible to apply.

Students gain a personal understanding of American history and their role as citizens by meeting their representatives and senators. More than 50,000 students from rural areas and small towns across America have participated in this program.

Youth Tour directors from each state association arrange their delegation's visits to their U.S. representatives, senators' offices, federal agencies, and other educational and sightseeing activities. In addition to the planned statewide activities, the Youth Tour experience encompasses multi-state activities coordinated by National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA).

Students were asked to prepare an essay answering the following question: "What moment in American history do you wish you had been a part of, and what would you have contributed?" Essays were judged by an outside independent reviewer and scored using a rubric based on grammar, organization, and effect.

We would like to congratulate Brianna and Mara for their winning essays. If your student is interested in the Youth Tour, applications are accepted during the fall of each year, with winners chosen in February and students attending in June of the following year. Learn more about Youth Tour here.
